This early work by Ernest Bramah was originally published in 1914 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introduction. 'Max Carrados' is a collection of Bramah's classic detective tales. Ernest Bramah Smith was born was near Manchester in 1868. He was a poor student, and dropped out of the Manchester Grammar School when sixteen years old to go into the farming business. Bramah found commercial and critical success with his first novel, The Wallet of Kai Lung, but it was his later stories of detective Max Carrados that assured him lasting fame.

I grabbed this book of Amazon for my kindle after hearing about the character on an old radio quiz show called "Information Please." Max Carrados is a wealthy British man who takes up a job as a private detective, with a twist: he is blind.Like most fictional blind characters, his other senses have been super heightened, so that he can read larger text on paper with his fingers, hear things others cannot hear, and so on. He combines these non visual clues while not being distracted by what he sees to come to solutions others miss or don't get to as quickly.
The book consists of several short stories, each more or less leading into the other but not as a sequence: his notoriety and fame grows over time as he solves several high profile cases, and others are alluded to, but not told.
Overall the writing is pretty solid, but a bit too florid and over-fancy at times, as if the author had a thesaurus on hand at all times and used it heavily. Several of the early stories are a bit heavy on the moralizing, whether about capital punishment or an Indian criminal who gives a two page rant on how the evil British colonizers are behaving. The mysteries are done well enough, usually fairly obscure although one relies very heavily on information that the writer just doesn't bother giving the readers.
Not a bad series of stories and the blind detective is an interesting twist with a likable main character, but not a real standout and I can see why this has basically been forgotten over time.

Historically interesting, this is an early 20th century collection of mystery / detective stories. Max is an eccentric precursor of Nero Wolfe and Hercule Poirot.

Having worked with blind and visually impaired kids, I am not surprised with Max's abilities. The stories are well written and intriguing. There is a good amount of suspense. Included is an article by the author on other visually impaired people in history whom have made their way in a sighted world. Even so Max is a fascinating person.
well written good plots great character and description
These stories are very well written, and interesting in the insight they give into the way a blind person experiences the world. I can't think of losing my eyesight with equanimity, but if it happened I would hope to triumph as well as Max Carrados. One of the introductions (I have read several of his books) told of many accomplishments by blind people I had not previously been aware of. Inspiring.
A nice attempt at the magic of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, quaintly dated, and intricate. But sadly very contrived with absurd deductions with little investigation and too much intuition. THe short story format basically forces then to be told to hastily. So this is not very engaging beyond the initial novelty of it's historical styling.
However they are not realistic. The things, like reading newspapers by touch, are quite impossible. But the cleverness of the plots makes them worthwhile. They are rather like the Sherlock Holmes stories. I have always found it a bit ridiculous to believe that a spot on one part of a persons finger proves his occupation. I simply can't believe that there is only one possible way such a spot could be produced. Max smells spirit gum as a man walks past him and knows the man wears a fake beard. With all the smells likely ... However I guess it seems to me that if one simply assumes that Max can see the stories would still stand up as cleverly plotted. Enjoy!
